Health and Safety Summer Co-op – Hamilton

Position Summary:

Health and Safety Agent will support the Turkstra Branches and Divisions facility by assisting in minimizing risks and potential losses due to injuries, policy violations or hazardous conditions within all locations. The goals, maintenance and coordination will be achieved primarily through education, ongoing training programs and process/policy audits.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct investigations for accidents and incidents by determining root causes and integrate preventative measures
  • Develop and Implement Health and Safety Programs to address health and safety concerns and participate in activities involving the Turkstra Health and Safety Strategic Team
  • Consolidate, analyze and provide a summary of all Occupational injuries and illness statistics, including near miss incidents to the Management team and JHSC on a monthly basis
  • Injury claim management, coordination of rapid re-employment and gradual return to work programs
  • Provide support to Management team by having a visible presence on the warehouse floor, promote safety plans, goals, objectives, and measurements
  • Develop and maintain a close relationship with HR and the Claims Specialist in order to promote efficient management of claims and return to work practices
  • Engage in fostering positive staffing relationships to gain commitment from all Turkstra staff
  • Attend monthly JHSC meetings
  • Ensure all Health and Safety communication boards are up to date and maintained in accordance with Provincial and Corporate standards
  • Assist in maintaining employee records and certifications for Forklift Operators and Trainer programs
  • Maintain all training records and documentations in accordance with applicable Occupational Health & Safety,Laws, Regulations, Legislations and CSA’s by provincial standards
  • Liase with Claims Consultant and WSIB as required
  • Identify and inform management of compliance issues, safety risks and improvement opportunities by conducting daily, weekly and monthly audits
  • Regularly review programs, bulletins, reports and communicate facility safety issues and changes to team members
  • Participate in the implementation of training programs for management and team members in work-site safety practices such as, fire prevention, lockout/tagout, fall protection and correct handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, material handling equipment and other materials
  • Collect and analyze statistical data pertaining to the health and safety program
  • Prepare various reports to support health and safety initiatives
  • Lead existing workplace health and safety programs including hazard assessments, workplace inspections, and incident investigation programs

Hours of Work

  • This position is schedule to work a total of 40 hours per week. A flexible schedule will be required to support all shifts as needed.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Post secondary degree or diploma with a focus on occupational health and safety is preferred
  • 2 – 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Knowledge of MTO, truck, forklift operations
  • Level 1& 2 Joint Health and Safety Committee Certification
  • Demonstrated knowledge of concepts found within applicable Occupational Health and Safety Legislation as well as relevant CSA Standards
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Health and Safety Investigation techniques as well as provincially specific investigative requirements such as Critical Injury Notifications etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of manual material handling strategies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mobile handling equipment safety
  • Valid certification in basic First Aid, CPR and AED training is an asset
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and time-management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to write professional reports, business correspondence, policies and procedures
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be detail oriented and possess a high degree of accuracy
  • Must take a pro-active approach to safety
  • Strong computer literacy including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Experience or knowledge with lumber, building materials and hardware products
