Step 3: Strap Your House
Installing vertical furring strips is mandated before installing trims and/or siding. 5/4” x 3” is the typical size used. Kiln-dried spruce with a moisture content below 19% is required for the strapping. The strapping must be nailed or screwed every 6”, should be staggered along the material for maximum strength, and should have a maximum penetration of 1 ¼” into the structure. Strapping should be installed 16” on center.
It is important to understand that there must be a gap left between the structure and the siding so that water and air can move as needed.
In a case where board and batten are used, the house or structure needs to be double strapped. See the installation manual for the technical specifications.

Note: Any vertical siding requires double strapping.
